Substance Use Disorder

Those who suffer from a substance use disorder (recreational and/or prescription) should not donate their milk.1 Someone is not a suitable donor if they use illegal drugs. Donors should disclose all drug use to recipients.

Narcotic-dependent mothers who are enrolled in a supervised methadone program and have a negative screening for HIV infection and other illicit drugs can breastfeed.2
